Deciding What to KEEP

These belonged to (late husband)’s sister. She used to have tea parties with them as a girl.
— Shirley; Age 91, moving to Independent Living

Is this something you feel like you need to have with you at Berkeley Square? Or is it time to let it go?

“Oh, I think I can let it go,” she says.

While our client is 91 and moving to independent living, she is a spry woman who runs circles around our packing team. She’s been remarkably *practical* when it comes to choosing what she’ll take with her on this move.

Some items are easier than others to let go of.

“Oh, I’ve never really liked that quilt, but it was a wedding gift from my sister-in-law…” She pauses for a moment and begins to walk away before twirling around suddenly and saying, “take it!” — and thrusting the folded quilt at us.

She was holding on to something out of obligation, even though it wasn’t practical and wouldn’t be used. There are no relatives who want the item, so she would let it go to auction.

Our belongings represent memories, and the key to deciding what to keep, and what to let go of during the downsizing process is this:

• choosing items that would represent the kind of Legacy you want to pass on

• a great legacy item is one that helps keep people and their memories alive, long after they’re gone from our lives.

Not everything needs to be saved, either! If EVERYTHING is special then nothing is going to stand out as special.

Our client is thinking ahead to her next chapter as she downsizes from 3600 sqft to 1600 sqft and she is discerning about what she’s taking.

Remember that it’s the deciding that is the hardest part. That’s why Lyn’s Daughter suggests starting *early* to decide.
