More Grip, Less Slip

A simple thing can change your life—like tripping on loose carpeting or a rug that has slipped out of place. These tripping hazards can easily cause a fall, resulting in a broken bone or sprain. For older people, a break can be the start of more serious problems, such as a trip to the hospital, injury, or even disability.

To age-in-place safely, it’s important to make sure that carpets and rugs are (1) secured, (2) undamaged, and (3) without curled edges.

Consider having a pad or gripper under the rug or carpet that keeps the surface from shifting. A simple fix like this can prevent many slips and falls.

The good news is that it’s easier than you might think to make small changes at home to keep yourself, and/or a loved one safe at home! The picture above took less than five minutes to go from “Before” to “After”.

TRY A NON-SLIP RUG PAD GRIPPER

If you cannot bear to part with your throw rug, try securing them using a Non-Slip Rug Pad Gripper or slip-resistant backings.

They are relatively inexpensive, easily procured (Walmart, Amazon, Target, etc.), and you can cut to fit.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT: Falls are the leading cause of injuries requiring emergency treatment in adults aged 65 and older.

Falls lead to more hospital admission and deaths than any other type of trauma. They are also associated with increased premature mortality, loss of independence, and nursing home placement.

HOW WE CAN HELP: Most older adults want to stay in their homes as they age, and doing so safely might entail downsizing, relocation or simplifying a home. Lyn’s Daughter can effectively assist clients who need to move, as well as those who prefer to remain in their homes.
