When the Plan Changes, the Mission Doesn’t

Some days, move management is less about moving boxes and more about managing change.

Today, my team was packing for a wonderful couple who will be moving to The Knolls of Oxford this weekend. Their original plan was straightforward: sell the house first, then move.

Life had other ideas.

Together with their Realtor, we adjusted the timeline, paused the home listing, accelerated the move, and shifted our focus to getting them safely settled into their new home. Once they’re comfortably in place, we’ll handle the final clean-out, coordinate junk removal, and prepare the house to go back on the market.

That’s what project management looks like in the real world. We create a plan based on our clients’ priorities—and when circumstances change, we change with them.

One of my favorite client quotes is:
“Planning is everything. The plan is nothing.”

It reminds us that the value isn’t in sticking rigidly to a checklist. The value is having a thoughtful process and the flexibility to adapt.

Of course, every move has its surprises.

During this morning’s walkthrough, someone casually mentioned a large piece of furniture and added, “Oh…I built it in this room.”

Cue my jaw hitting the floor.

Before I could say a word, one of my team members looked up and deadpanned, “Hey, don’t look at me. I’m only here for Marion’s nervous breakdown.”

We all burst out laughing.

What could have become a stressful moment turned into a problem-solving session instead. After talking it through with the clients, we learned the piece isn’t quite what it appears from the outside. With a little extra planning—and a little extra expertise—we’ll make sure it arrives safely in its new home.

Those moments happen on nearly every project. The difference isn’t whether something unexpected comes up. It’s having a team that knows how to respond.

The compliment we hear most often is, “We couldn’t do this without you.”

We’re grateful every time someone says it, but we also understand what they’re really telling us. They’re overwhelmed. They’re juggling a major life transition while managing everything else life is throwing at them.
